Overview
CONNECTOME is an invitation to slow down and rediscover the joy of discovery.
You move through a series of beautiful, minimalist rooms — each anchored by a single bold hue, an evolving ambient score, and geometries drawn from the mathematical ratios found in nature and architecture. There’s no winning or losing here. The reward is the wonder of seeing something for the first time.
On Apple Vision Pro, your attention is the gesture. Gaze-based hover reveals hidden shapes and forms just by scanning the space with your eyes — no controllers, no menus, hands-free if you like. Look to find, pinch to reveal, drag to connect. (On Meta Quest, the same world responds to your hands.)
CONNECTOME is a place you’ve never been, built from shapes you already know. Some rooms echo connect-the-dots, rewarding curiosity and insight. Others simply delight in the unexpected — a grid rising into a mountain, a portal forming mid-air.
“I set out to create an interactive environment that felt artful. Color choice, layout, and composition are all intentional.” — Grant Hinkson, creator
Features
- Gaze-based hover on Apple Vision Pro: scan space with your eyes to find interactable objects
- Hand-based interactions on Meta Quest: scan with your hands to find interactable objects
- 20 unique rooms at launch: each with its own color, geometry, and mood
- Two core interactions: “pinch-to-reveal” and “drag-to-connect”
- An original, ambient soundtrack: composed for the experience

Background
CONNECTOME is the first immersive experience authored by Parietal Lab founder Grant Hinkson. At the end of 2023, Grant left his day job in big tech to launch Parietal Lab and build CONNECTOME. After years of managing people, Grant was ready to get hands on again and build something personal.
“At the beginning of the year [2024] I didn’t know exactly what I was going to build. I just knew what I wanted it to feel like. I leaned into the generative art I was creating and just trusted that through the process of discovery and creation, something interesting would materialize.” – Grant Hinkson, creator, Connectome
Grant set out to create an experience that invited a sense of discovery and “wow moments”, noting that at times CONNECTOME can feel like a meditative space, supported by an ambient, evolving soundscape.
CONNECTOME was launched for Meta Quest on May 27, 2025 and will launch for Apple Vision Pro in June 2026.
CONNECTOME for Apple Vision Pro
CONNECTOME runs as a fully immersive Metal experience on Apple Vision Pro and takes advantage of visionOS-specific features to enhance the feeling of immersion. These features are not provided by Unity out of the box and required that I build a custom Unity + Metal bridge. The first of these features, eye-gaze based hover, was the most foundational (and most challenging to implement). I believe I may be the first (or one of the first) to pull this off. The second feature enables a color wash to be applied to hands so your hands pick up the hue of the space you’re in.
For more background on these features, read the full technical write-up.
About Grant
Grant Hinkson is a multi-disciplinary technologist and artist whose work spans design, software development, and music composition. CONNECTOME brought all of those threads into a single creation — he handled the concept, design, code, score, and sound himself.
Since founding Parietal Lab at the end of 2023, he’s worked across mediums. He launched CONNECTOME on Meta Quest in May 2025, and a second VR experience, CONSTELLATIONS, in early 2026. He composes and releases original music — the CONNECTOME score, plus solo piano under his own name. He exhibits interactive, physical art around Seattle, including “The Door,” a real-world reimagining of a key moment from CONNECTOME, and “Night Sky,” a projection-based installation. And he stays active in the XR and design community as a speaker, teacher, and mentor — recent talks include The Prototyper’s Mindset at XRCC Online and a session at the PNW Art & Tech Symposium, and at Electric SEA he led a hands-on workshop where participants built custom MIDI controllers to drive real-time generative visuals.
Before Parietal Lab, Grant spent his career at the intersection of design and technology — most recently as Head of Design Engineering in Amazon’s Devices and Services Design Group, where he led a team prototyping next-generation experiences across the Echo, Fire TV, and Fire Tablet families. Earlier, he worked on a range of Xbox programs at Microsoft, including Xbox Music and Video and the Xbox 360 ADK that brought streaming apps like Netflix and Hulu to the console.
Grant shares his art at granthinkson.com/art (aka fr0gg3r.com), on Instagram at instagram.com/the.fr0gg3r, and writes about creating at his Substack, Grant Hinkson: On Creating.
